Serie A club chief confirms Chelsea defensive target is going nowhere in January

Torino won’t sell Chelsea target Alessandro Buongiorno this January

In what might come as a blow to Chelsea, the club president of Serie A side Torino confirmed his stance on 24-year-old centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno and maintained that he will not sell the player in this transfer window.

While he did not comment on whether or not he is open to a summer move for the player, the choice of words is indicative of the fact that Buongiorno might make his way out of Turin come the summer of 2024. His contract at Torino lasts until 2028 (Transfermarkt).

Buongiorno is a very aggressive central defender capable of putting in a shift at left-back as well. The fact that he can play two positions is one of the main reasons why Chelsea show interest in signing the player. However, the president’s revelation (via Fabrizio Romano) is surely a jolt to the Blues’ transfer plans.

“I’m not gonna sell Alessandro Buongiorno, I can confirm my position once again”.

His defensive actions compared to other centre-backs are a reflection of how resolute his as a pure defender. According to FBref, Alessandro Boungiorno is in the 98th percentile for interceptions per 90. 82nd percentile for tackles per 90. For a Chelsea side looking to rebuild their defensive line, the Italian international might prove to be a smart investment.

As Thiago Silva approaches the age of 40, the potential acquisition of Buongiorno assumes added significance for Chelsea, offering a long-term solution in the central defensive role. The prospect of Boungiorno stepping into Silva’s shoes aligns with Chelsea’s broader objective of succession planning and ensuring a seamless transition within the squad.

Given his defensive prowess and adaptability, Buongiorno’s style of play appears well-suited to Chelsea’s tactical requirements. The Blues, grappling with uncertainties in the defensive department, could benefit significantly from the addition of a player of Buongiorno’s calibre. Moreover, the timing aligns with Silva’s contract at Stamford Bridge set to expire in the coming summer, potentially opening up a spot for the Italian defender.

Torino won’t sell Chelsea target Alessandro Buongiorno this January.

While the Torino president’s declaration may pose an immediate challenge to Chelsea’s aspirations in the current transfer window, the club could intensify their pursuit of Buongiorno in the upcoming summer transfer market alongside other targets.
