Petit tells Chelsea to ‘learn from their mistakes’ and avoid ‘joke’ transfer in January

Emmanuel Petit has questioned Chelsea transfer policy and advised them to not sell Conor Gallagher

Emmanuel Petit has slammed Todd Boehly’s transfer policy and urged Chelsea to keep Conor Gallagher, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues have spent around £1 billion on transfers in one year and now face the Financial Fair Play problem, which has seen the club put a few homegrown players on the list of departures.

Seeing that Gallagher is on that list has been a bit surprising considering how much the midfielder has improved and that the club has already sold a few academy players to Premier League clubs; for example, the club sold Mason Mount to Manchester United.

But Petit feels the West Londoners shouldn’t make the same mistake again and keep the 23-year-old at the club despite plenty of interest from clubs he further told Dazn:

“I understand Chelsea’s frustration with Gallagher potentially going to Tottenham. And you know what? I was surprised to read that in the newspapers. I thought to myself, Is it a joke? What’s the point after asking him to come back from Crystal Palace?”

“I think they don’t learn from their mistakes because it happened with Mason Mount. So what is the point? I mean, it’s very important for the supporters to get some English players in the team. For me, identity is very important.”

The Petit claim is spot on because you want to sell Gallagher to a direct rival who is way ahead of us in the table, and the 23-year-old addition to that team will further improve them, which will make it regretful soon. It’s acceptable that we have to make a profit given how much we have spent. We should avoid selling our academy players because we have a few now and if a club need an identity then we must keep Cobham graduates.

Meanwhile, Mount’s situation was different because he wanted to leave and was reluctant to extend his contract. But here, Gallagher wants to fight for his place. He has refined his game big time under Mauricio Pochettino, and even the Argentine is backing him to stay at Chelsea.
