Mauricio Pochettino’s update on the Levi Colwill injury will give Chelsea fans some breath of fresh air after the centre-back prematurely left the pitch during the warm-up before the FA Cup game against Aston Villa.
Alfie Gilchrist was then called up into the XI and converted as a right-back, which saw Axel Disasi play as a centre-back while Benoit Badiashile functioned as a left-back.
The Argentine said it’s a small issue, and he should participate in the next training. It was a prudent decision from the manager to prevent him from suffering any injury.
The club has a growing list of injuries, and adding more names to it would have proved costly to the club and Pochettino. However, the match ended in a 0-0 draw, and there will now be a replay. While it does add to our schedule, the task should be manageable once the sidelined players become available.
After the game, the former Southampton manager was queried about the severity of Colwill’s injury and his words will come as music to ears, (h/t Football.London, when he said:
“No, we don’t believe it’s so bad. A small issue was that he didn’t feel comfortable. We knew before that we might not start with him, but then he was ready to play. Then he felt something, but it’s not a big issue. I hope he can train tomorrow.”
It was a big setback when Colwill was deemed unfit to play the match because we were already short of options at left-backs. Benoit Badiashile had to operate from that position and he fared reasonably considering the defender has previously played in the role while at AS Monaco.
It made sense for Pochettino to sit out the England international match because participation would have made his injury worse and maybe added him to the list of injured players. We need a lot of depth in the second half of the season because it will get increasingly demanding and we need to monitor players’ game time and provide them with much-needed rest.
