Graeme Souness has named Ivan Toney as the missing piece in the jigsaw for Chelsea and Arsenal after the striker made his return to the Premier League following an eight-month ban for breaching betting rules.
The 27-year-old centre-forward was in the starting lineup and captained Brentford in the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest. Toney quickly made his presence felt after levelling the score through the set piece.
His goal laid out why Premier League teams have been pursuing him this season. They clearly missed their star forward as the Bees’ performance declined and they are currently 14th in the table.
However, the return of Toney injects some goalscoring potency into the squad, but it remains to be seen if he will remain at the club in January, given the interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.
The former Liverpool player has already made a statement about why the Gunners and Blues should pursue Toney. (h/t Football.London), Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said:
“He could be the missing piece for Arsenal or Chelsea, who both need a different type of attacker.”
We concur with Souness’s analysis since Toney might be the missing component and we need to resolve our goalscoring problems. If Chelsea could recruit Ivan Toney, they would be highly effective because his playing style perfectly complements Mauricio Pochettino’s.
However, Jackson shares the same characteristics as Toney. Jackson continues to blossom at Chelsea, but the England international has experience and is a threat in front of the net, so he is undoubtedly ahead of the Senegalese.
Toney’s price will go up in the market because he returned solid and scored a goal. Therefore, the Blues will need to make some tough choices over whether to pursue Victor Osimhen or Toney.
