Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Sevilla are progressing through talks with Chelsea to sign David Datro Fofana, who is currently on loan to Union Berlin and won’t be on the bench to face Armenia.
The striker was signed last January and barely appeared for the Blues before being loaned out to a German club this summer. Fofana has featured in 17 games in Berlin and scored two goals across all competitions.
The striker was also involved in a clash with the German’s club manager, but things have cooled down, and now it seems Fofana could be sold to Spanish club Sevilla, who are looking to add a centre-forward.
Fofana is just 21 and hasn’t been nurtured properly; he barely played in December for the Bundesliga side, and a move to Sevilla will be sensible and there he can be a great fit for them.
But concern would be whether he would thrive in Sevilla, given they are enduring a poor spell and are 16th in the table. He will certainly have pressure to change the outcome of the club and bring goals.
He hasn’t been able to reach the heights at Union Berlin, so it will be prudent for him to go somewhere else where he can start again and prove his mettle once more.
Fofana is a lethal striker, but we have not seen his killer instincts in front of the goal so far because Union Berlin has barely used him. He is young and needs careful nurturing. Both clubs are at the bottom of the table and will certainly demand players rise to the occasion.
La Liga is a very different and very physical game where the majority of the teams play defensive football. It will be a great challenge for a striker like Fofana, who can learn a lot from the league and if he thrives then we can take Sevilla from the bottom of the table.
