Journalist says Chelsea selling star midfielder to PL rivals is a ‘deal that has got legs’

Sami Mokbel says Chelsea selling captain Conor Gallagher is an actual possibility

Conor Gallagher and his future at Chelsea is a discussion that just doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon. The talented young Blues midfielder is yet to renew his contract at the club and this has led to speculation about his future.

Gallagher has a contract with the West London club until the end of the season (Transfermarkt). A Cobham graduate, the fans admire the midfielder and will be hoping to avoid a ‘Mason Mount’ kind of situation with the 23-year-old.

Mauricio Pochettino has placed a lot of trust in the midfielder’s abilities this season so far. He has become one of the first names on the team sheet. The former Spurs manager even handed him the armband when regular captains Reece James and Ben Chilwell were ruled out with long-term injuries.

All this could have been an elaborate attempt to get him to commit his future to the club. Giving him more responsibility like captaincy would have been the club’s way of showing that they valued him. Unfortunately, this hasn’t made him sign the dotted line just yet.

Tottenham have been heavily linked with a move for Gallagher for quite some time now. Interest from the North London club seems genuine. The Chelsea midfielder is just the kind of player who would thrive in Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Speaking about the situation on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, journalist Sami Mokbel revealed that the transfer story involving Tottenham and Gallagher definitely ‘has legs’.

“That’s a deal that’s got legs. It’s incredible really, Gallagher is the de facto captain at Chelsea, he’s playing every week, and yet, he’s a player that at the right price is available in January. I think it’s madness, history tells us that under the new regime at Chelsea they look at academy players as vehicles around FFP regulations. It’s clear that Chelsea need reinforcements, and they’re now looking at Gallagher with 18 months left of his contract, they’re trying to tie him down to a new one, but they’re looking at Gallagehr and thinking if they can get towards £50m-60m while his contract is still up in the air they should be doing that.”

This isn’t a welcome update for Chelsea fans. Following his incredible start to the season, no one wants him to leave the club. Losing academy prospects one after another doesn’t bode well for a club like ours.

Ideally, the Blues will be pushing to reach a resolution on a new contract with Gallagher by the end of this month. If not, there won’t be any surprise if the club try to sell him, instead of running the risk of losing him for free in the summer.

It’s not a very good situation to be in with respect to Gallagher. All we can do is hope that the player agrees to renew his deal and stay here in the long term. Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that his trust in the player pays off. If not, Spurs are lurking. Let’s wait and see how it goes.
