Fabrizio Romano gives welcome update on Chelsea-Tottenham talks for Conor Gallagher

Fabrizio Romano dismisses talks between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur for Conor Gallagher

Speaking on his YouTube channel, popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that there have been no talks between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur recently for stand-in captain Conor Gallagher.

Gallagher’s future at the club has been a topic of constant discussion in recent months. All this has to do with the fact that the talented English midfielder will be a free agent next summer as things stand and is yet to commit his long-term future to his boyhood club.

This has not stopped Mauricio Pochettino from placing immense faith in the midfielder’s abilities and much to the surprise of everyone, he has emerged as one of the first names on the team sheet. His performances this season have been very promising.

Gallagher first came to prominence during a loan spell at Crystal Palace a couple of seasons ago. Establishing himself as a box crashing midfielder for the Eagles, it was the midfielder’s incredible engine that caught the eye of Chelsea and other clubs.

Much like most of the names at Chelsea, Gallagher had a horrendous last season at the club. It did not help that the club changed four managers and it looked like the midfielder might not get his due in a Chelsea shirt after all.

Enter, Poch!

When Mauricio Pochettino assumed duty as Chelsea’s manager in the summer, not many would have envisioned the kind of prominence he would Gallagher in the team. In fact, the former Spurs coach signed both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia in the summer and along with Enzo Fernandez, the trio were expected to be the preferred choice for the season.

It must be added here that an untimely injury to Lavia played into the hands of Gallagher. He started the first game of the season and has not looked back ever since. His work rate has been incredible, and he has even been named the stand-in captain for the Blues in the absence of Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

Chelsea must not sell Conor Gallagher

Whilst talks of a potential exit to Tottenham Hotspur just doesn’t seem to die down, here is what Fabrizio Romano had to say on the situation

“The conversation between Chelsea and Gallagher on a new contract is still there. It’s obvious it’s a difficult one and at the moment nothing is guaranteed or done but the conversation is still there. There are currently no negotiations between Tottenham and Chelsea for Conor Gallagher.”

This must feel so good to hear, as Chelsea fans. Whilst the fact that negotiations are still difficult is not a welcome update, we all adore Conor and would love to see him stay here for a long time.

The fact that Tottenham are not really keen on Gallagher could do with the fact that Rodrigo Bentancur has made a miraculous recovery from an injury that was expected to keep him out till late February. Chelsea can now breathe easy, for the time being.
