Exciting Chelsea asset regrets joining PL rival on loan, ready to continue to work

Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos feels he made a poor decision by joining Nottingham Forest on loan

Andrey Santos, a teenage midfielder for Chelsea, asserts that he chose to sign a loan with Nottingham Forest, but the Blues called the player back due to insufficient playing time.

The 19-year-old joined Chelsea from Brazilian club Vasco de Gama and was part of the Blues’ pre-season visit to the USA, but it appeared the youngster needed more development to be a first-team player and was loaned in hopes of maturing at Forest.

As the team struggled with mediocre play, former Forest manager Steve Cooper hardly offered him any playing time. Cooper was eventually replaced by Nuno Espírito Santo at Forest.

The Blues also opted to recall Santos back to the club, and the Brazilian midfielder will hope to get some game time for West London after injuries to first-team midfielders. He also recalled his poor decision, (h/t Metro), and told Globo:

‘‘It was my choice. Unfortunately, it wasn’t what we all imagined. I imagined that I was going to play and so on; I was always ready and always well, but it was the coach’s choice, and I respect it. I continued working, and, thank God, I’m back at Chelsea, ready to do my best for any team I’m with.’’

Santos experienced an instance where things did not turn out as planned. Even though Santos was a marginal player and Forest wanted to use their more experienced player because they weren’t playing well, Santos’ value would have declined even further if he hadn’t fared well.

Chelsea made a good decision by recalling him back, given that the Blues are short on midfielders following injuries to Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu, while Alex Matos is on loan at Huddersfield Town. So Santos will have a chance to play for the Blues in the second half of the season, as Mauricio Pochettino will hope to give more rest to the likes of Moises Caicedo and Conor Gallagher so they avoid picking up injuries.
