Benfica reject Chelsea’s bid for Antonio Silva
Chelsea’s pursuit of Benfica’s talented centre-back, Antonio Silva, has hit a roadblock as the Portuguese club rejected a bid from Mauricio Pochettino’s side. The Blues, eager to bolster their defensive ranks, identified Silva as a potential long-term replacement for Thiago Silva, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
That is as per the Daily Mail. Chelsea’s initial offer of £52m fell short of Benfica’s valuation, with the Portuguese club holding firm on their stance. Benfica is reportedly adamant that they will not entertain any offers below Silva’s £86m release clause. The 20-year-old centre-back has emerged as a sought-after prospect, showcasing his defensive prowess and potential for growth.
Antonio Silva’s contract with Benfica extends until 2027 (Transfermarkt), adding a layer of complexity to any potential negotiations. The rejection of Chelsea’s bid signals Benfica’s determination to retain their prized defensive asset or secure a fee that aligns with the player’s release clause.
Chelsea’s interest in Silva aligns with their strategic approach of securing young talents with considerable upside. The Argentine manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is keen on reinforcing the defensive line, and Silva’s skill set has evidently caught the attention of the Chelsea hierarchy. Very recently, former Tottenham and Benfica man Jan Vertonghen had a lot of positives to say about Silva and here is what he said via talkSPORT:
“If he keeps doing what he’s been doing, he has everything to be one of the best defenders in the world in a year or two.”
The negotiations between Chelsea and Benfica are poised to be a pivotal subplot in the January transfer window. Whether the Blues will return with an improved bid, meet the release clause demands, or explore alternative defensive targets remains to be seen.
Benfica’s reluctance to part ways with the promising centre-back at a discounted rate underscores their commitment to securing maximum value for one of their prized assets. And understandably; they would not want to part ways with a top player for a small fee. Plus their business model is based on feeding other European clubs, for the lack of a better word.
