The latest transfer rumours linking Chelsea with a move for Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez might not hold much weight, according to Fabrizio Romano. While the Blues are in the market for attacking reinforcements, Romano suggests that Martinez is likely to stay at Inter Milan and even sign a new contract with the Italian club.
Chelsea have been exploring options to bolster their attacking options, especially with Nicolas Jackson facing challenges in his first season with the club and Armando Broja struggling to secure a regular spot due to injury setbacks. However, Romano, in his exclusive Daily Briefing column with CaughtOffside, has poured cold water on the speculation surrounding Martinez’s potential move to Stamford Bridge.
Despite the allure of Martinez as an elite attacking talent who could thrive in the Premier League, Romano remains sceptical about the feasibility of the Argentine’s transfer to Chelsea. He anticipates that Inter Milan will retain the services of Martinez and is even predicting a new contract for the 26-year-old Argentine international.
Discussing the Martinez to Chelsea links, here is what Romano said via his exclusive CaughtOffside column :
“Lautaro Martinez is a great player so we can always expect to see some stories about him on the market, with the latest being that Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is increasingly keen on him.”
“I’m afraid I don’t have anything very positive for Chelsea fans on this one, though! Everything I’m hearing is that Lautaro is going to sign a new deal at Inter shortly.”
This season alone, he has 17 goals and four assists in 23 appearances across all competitions and is one of the biggest reasons why the Nerazzuri are leading the Serie A charts, heads and shoulders above everyone else bar second-placed Juventus who trail by one point.
While the Blues have been actively seeking solutions to enhance their attacking prowess, the likelihood of securing Martinez‘s signature appears to be diminishing, at least according to Romano’s insights. As the transfer window unfolds, fans will keenly observe how Chelsea navigates the market and whether alternative options will emerge to address the attacking needs of the squad.
As the transfer window unfolds, Chelsea may need to explore alternative options to address their attacking needs. Someone like a Victor Osimhen or a Boniface. It won’t take a lot of time to see how things unfold for Poch and Co. in the coming weeks. Hopefully, at the end of the window, the Blues address all their needs and put up a better show in 2024 than in 2023.
The unpredictability of the transfer market ensures that surprises can occur, but for now, the prospect of Lautaro Martinez donning the Chelsea blue seems less plausible.
