Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku among top goal scorers in 2023
Even though he did not feature for Chelsea in the year at all, Romelu Lukaku is still on the club’s books. He spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Inter Milan and is now spending the current season on a second loan spell in Italy, but under Jose Mourinho at AS Roma. The 30-year-old Belgian international fell out with Chelsea back in the Thomas Tuchel era, and it surely does not seem like he would return to the club.
The player scored 40 goals in 61 appearances across all competitions for club(s) and country in the 2023 calendar year and ranks fifth on the list of top scorers spearheaded by Cristiano Ronaldo. He was a crucial player for Inter in the first half of the year, playing a crucial role in them reaching the UEFA Champions League final. However, his performance in that game against Manchester City was absolutely bonkers and it is understandable why the Nerazzurri moved on.
Now donning AS Roma colours, Lukaku has continued to showcase his goal-scoring prowess under the guidance of Mourinho. While his future with Chelsea remains uncertain, his remarkable form throughout the year is a testament to his consistency and impact on the field.
It is worth noting that Lukaku’s absence from Chelsea doesn’t diminish his significance in the broader football landscape. His goalscoring instincts are sharp as ever.
Such is the irony that the Blues need a prolific goalscorer at the moment. They lack that ‘kick’ in the final three and Lukaku, if we assume brings his form from Italy back to England, can surely provide us with goals.
However, every time he plays for Chelsea, he underperforms. He plays like he does not have his mind at Stamford Bridge. His contract at Chelsea expires in 2026 (Transfermarkt) and it would be best if the club sells him to Roma or any other party this January window to generate enough funds that could be directed towards the requirements of the first-team.
