Chelsea joined by Liverpool in pursuit of Premier League star with nine-figure valuation

Liverpool and Chelsea set to battle for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães

Chelsea and Liverpool are keeping an eye on Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who is an indispensable player under Eddie Howe on Tyneside.

According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, (h/t Fichajes), both Liverpool and Chelsea have the Brazilian on their radar, and the midfielder’s release clause is around €115 million (£98.9 million).

Barcelona have also sounded out their interest, but their financial woes could halt them from making a move, giving the Blues and Liverpool the chance to fight for the Brazilian.

The Brazilian joined the Magpies from Olympique Lyon and helped the club secure a Champions League spot last season, and his performance has seen him attract top Premier League sides.

The 26-year-old could be forced to sell by Newcastle given that the club is enduring high losses and has registered a deficit of £73 million for the 2022–23 season. So they might cash in on some players to make revenue, as they want to avoid breaking the Financial Fair Play rule.

Guimaraes, who has been sensational for Tyneside, could help the club generate great profit from his exit, and both Premier League sides would want to take advantage of such a chance. The Brazilian is Premier League-proven and will provide plenty of expertise in the middle of the pitch. His ability to defend from midfield will free up other midfield players to play farther up the pitch. In addition, he will provide additional protection in case the opposition launches a counterattack.

His addition will be very valuable to both clubs and as Chelsea’s roster is primarily composed of young players, his arrival will be excellent for the younger players to gain insight from. Lesley Ugochukwu, Romeo Lavia, and Moises Caicedo will all benefit greatly from his experience. Still just 26, Guimaraes is entering his prime and can serve Chelsea for years to come.

Liverpool join Chelsea in the race to sign Bruno Guimarães.

The same thing can be said about Liverpool, who have lost Fabinho and Jordan Henderson and signed Wataru Endo, who is still settling into the league. But Jurgen Klopp has most of the time used Alexis Mac Allister as a defensive midfielder, who is naturally an attacking midfielder. Both clubs have faced off directly in the transfer market of late and Chelsea will hope they continue to come out on top.

Now it will mainly depend on which club is ready to spend huge amounts to land the Brazilian midfielder. Given the Magpies’ financial predicament, they might also be ready for the negotiations.
