Chelsea hold talks with £30m-rated Championship defender who has PL experience

Chelsea plotting January move for Southampton fullback Kyle Walker-Peters

Chelsea could kick start their January transfer window with a move for Southampton fullback Kyle Walker-Peters as the Blues consider further strengthening their right-back roster

According to TeamTalk, (h/t Football.London), the Blues have discussed a potential move for the defender with his agent, and a transfer could take place this month as Chelsea look to ramp up the signing. The report also reveals that he will be available for £30 million this month, which could prove to be a bargain for West Londoners.

Walker-Peters is a Tottenham Hotspur academy player who joined the Saints last year after they were relegated last summer, and now Chelsea could help the fullback move back to the Premier League.

However, despite being a right-back, the 26-year-old is a versatile player and can also operate as a left-back, which will be a big plus for Mauricio Pochettino, who has never had fully fit fullbacks.

Reece James and Marc Cucurella are recovering from injuries, while Ben Chilwell recently returned from a long-term ailment. This has forced the Argentine manager to use players out of their positions. This has irked the other players, as Levi Colwill, for the first half of the campaign, has operated as a left-back.

Transfer News: Chelsea is keen on signing Kyle Walker-Peters to provide cover for Reece James.

Walker-Peters is familiar with playing in the English top flight, so settling in and adjusting to life at Stamford Bridge should not be too difficult for him. Additionally, he will relieve Malo Gusto of some of the load because of his regular game time.

Gusto is the only fullback who isn’t injured, and given Chilwell’s recent rehabilitation, it will take time to find his rhythm after a long-term injury, so signing the former Spurs fullback makes more sense for us. It will be an ideal deal for the Blues, and he will bring a great deal of experience to the squad. He is affordable, and the Blues should move quickly for him before any other club swoops in.
