A View From The Bridge

Newcastle outcast termed as a ‘short-term’ solution to solve Chelsea’s striker problems

Chelsea eye a move for Newcastle’s Callum Wilson amid competition from Arsenal

The January transfer window has taken an intriguing turn as Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United are on alert regarding the potential availability of Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson.

The England international, who has netted 46 goals in 102 games for Newcastle, could be on the move before the January deadline with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United, all eyeing a move for the England international.

That is as per Eurosport via Standard. Newcastle, under new ownership since 2021, are looking to raise funds to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules after substantial spending. Wilson’s proven track record as a Premier League goalscorer makes him an attractive option for Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United, all seeking a striker to bolster their squads.

At 31 years old, Wilson could offer a short-term solution for these top clubs, each evaluating their options to enhance their attacking prowess. With 86 goals in 215 Premier League appearances, Wilson brings valuable experience and a proven goalscoring record.

Wilson to Stamford Bridge?

While Wilson had previously discussed a potential move to Atletico Madrid, he remains focused on staying in the Premier League to secure a spot in the England squad for Euro 2024. AC Milan has also been linked to the striker, adding another layer of competition for his signature.

The potential availability of Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran has surfaced as an alternative option, but Chelsea’s reluctance to pursue Karim Benzema due to high wage demands has left them exploring various possibilities in the striking department.

Having said that, both Chelsea and Arsenal might also consider waiting until the summer transfer window to pursue top-class strikers, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Brentford’s Ivan Toney expected to be available. This strategic approach aligns with their long-term planning and allows them to secure targets that fit their squad requirements.

As the final week of the January window unfolds, the potential movement of Callum Wilson presents an intriguing storyline. The striker’s availability adds a layer of intrigue to the market, especially considering how silent the January window has been for Premier League clubs so far. Even though his contract lasts until 2025 (Transfermarkt), Newcastle’s willingness to sell might see any potential buyers get him for a cut price.
