Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen is open to joining Borussia Dortmund
Fabrizio Romano via X has confirmed that Borussia Dortmund has submitted a loan proposal to Chelsea for Ian Maatsen. Further details will be disclosed as negotiations progress between the two clubs.
Romano also revealed that Chelsea’s left-back is open to joining the German club on loan. This move would provide him with valuable playing time, especially after a challenging first half of the season at Stamford Bridge.
Maatsen has not been a regular starter for the Blues and has often found himself on the bench. Additionally, Mauricio Pochettino’s tactics have seen him displaced from his natural position
The club were on the verge of selling him to Burnley last summer, but Maatsen declined the move as he was determined to compete for his position at the West London club.
However, thus far, that aspiration hasn’t materialized, and he has predominantly served as a substitute. A transfer to Dortmund would now offer Maatsen the opportunity for much-needed playing time.
Presently, Pochettino has viable choices in the left-back position. With Ben Chilwell returning to training, Maatsen’s playing time is expected to diminish further.
During the period when all the regular fullbacks were injured, the Argentine manager showed a preference for Levi Colwill in the left-back role. This situation should prompt Maatsen to seek minutes on the field elsewhere
Despite his talent as a left-back, Pochettino’s reluctance to utilize him must have a reasoning behind it. A loan spell at Dortmund could prove beneficial, considering Dortmund’s reputation as the best club for nurturing young talents.
Staying at Chelsea might hinder his development since, up to this point, Pochettino hasn’t been swayed by his performances, leading to irregular opportunities on the field.
