Mauricio Pochettino dismissed rumours of being linked with the Manchester United job last summer and says he is fully focused on Chelsea as his side prepares to face Erik Ten Hag and Co on Wednesday.
After leaving Tottenham Hotspur, the Argentine manager was linked with a United job on numerous occasions before the Red Devils ultimately appointed Ten Hag in 2022. Pochettino did return to the Premier League this summer, but at arch-rivals, Chelsea.
The 51-year-old was named Chelsea manager in the recently concluded 2023 summer window after an extensive interview with the Stamford Bridge faithful. The Blues are now 10th in the Premier League and are enduring a unsteady run of results under the Argentine.
Meanwhile, United are seventh in the table, and last season they won the Carabao Cup under the Dutch manager. Now both sides will face each other on Wednesday night, and on that occasion, before the game, Pochettino was asked about the United job when he was linked several times, (h/t Mirror) he said:
“I’m not going to talk about it. You laugh, but you try to make me talk too much. I don’t want to make a mistake. I am not the person to talk about what is going on at different clubs. I am happy with this project. We are dealing with many situations; we need to improve also.”
Despite their inconsistency, Chelsea have what it takes to hurt the best teams on their day. We saw that against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, arguably two of the Blues’ best performances under Pochettino. With Manchester United also struggling to impress, we have a solid shot at getting one over the Red Devils.
It’s a good thing Pochettino chose not to respond to this absurd question, after all what does it matter now that he has taken on the reins at Stamford Bridge. We often hear similar rumours about this manager being associated with this team, but the outcomes turn out to be different. Pochettino is currently Chelsea’s manager, a move that has pleased the team and its supporters. The team is now gradually seeing results, but it will take some time to materialise.
If he had joined United, things would have been very different from what they are now since the team appears chaotic and their manager has lost the support of the players as his relationships with them worsen. In the meantime, the players, manager, and board are cooperating to ensure that the team is moving in the correct direction.
