Eddie Howe feels Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo deserved a red card on his tackle on Anthony Gordon

Eddie Howe says Moises Caicedo should have received a red card for his tackle on Anthony Gordon, who was replaced by Matt Ritchie in the 52nd minute.

Gordon couldn’t continue playing, and he struggled to run after suffering a dangerous tackle from Caicedo. The fans couldn’t believe that the Ecuadorian midfielder only received a yellow card for his dreadful tackle on the England international.

Caicedo had little chance of winning the ball back, and when Gordon was on the ball, he clattered from back on the 22-year-old legs forcefully. Gordon was later forced off despite receiving treatment on the pitch as he was struggling to play.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder should be thankful to the referee, as he wasn’t called by VAR to look into the screen, given that VAR isn’t utilised in domestic matches because it’s only used in the Premier League.

However, for Howe, it was a straight red card. He later commented on the tackle when asked by the reporter, (h/t BBC), saying:

I’m going on what other people have said, and they said it should be a red card. It’s a very painful moment for us. We’ll just have to accept it and digest it very quickly because we go back to the Premier League and go to Luton. That will be an emotional game.

Was Caicedo deserving of a straight red card with his tackle on Gordon?

Honestly, Caicedo was really lucky because his tackle was really harsh on Gordon and it was deserving of a straight red card from the referee but since Var isn’t used in these domestic games he avoided a red card otherwise referee would have been called to see the match screen and review his decision.

It makes sense that he enjoys tackling, but in certain situations, he needs to act responsibly because he can’t just tackle without purpose. Despite his age, he must time his tackles otherwise it will be us who will suffer from his absence.

We are already lacking in depth in the midfield. With half of our midfield injured, had he been shown a red card we would have been without a midfielder except for Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernandez for the next Carabao Cup match.
