Journo explains reason behind Chelsea’s vague Reece James injury statement, says its ‘bad news’

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva could be in contention to play against Liverpool in Carabao Cup final

Matt Law labels reports on Chelsea captain Reece James unavailability as vague

Telegraph journalist Matt Law reveals it’s still uncertain how long Reece James will be out with the hamstring injury he picked up in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Everton last Sunday.

It is also understood that surgery for the right-back hasn’t been ruled out, and currently both players and the club are contemplating it. Plenty of stories revealed the fullback could be out until 2/3 months.

It is another setback for the right-back, who suffered an identical injury in the season’s opening game vs. Liverpool and was out for a month. This time it could be more than three months, which will be a massive blow for Chelsea’s captain.

James has only started five games this season as he built his fitness back from a previous injury, and now another one could certainly eat up half of the season for him.

But journalist Matt Law has shed some light on the James injury update, (h/t Football.London), and revealed it to the London Is Blue Podcast, where he said:

“In fairness to the club, they don’t have a length on the timeline, but they know it’s going to be months. Various people have tweeted for different lengths of time, but it could be two months, four months, or even more.”

“They can still do surgery on him, but they’re not at that stage to confirm that yet, and I think they felt people would start writing about it. I’ve been speaking to people around Reece, around the club, and around the medical team, and they can’t put a timeline on it yet, so that’s why it’s such a vague statement.”

Since James’ injury, there have been several reports that he will miss two to three months of action. Now, Matt Law has stated that James’ ailment may require a longer time to heal. This means he is set to miss the majority of the season with an injury which is very devastating for a player of his age because same thing happened last campaign as well.

The severity of his injury is yet unknown, but if he chooses to have surgery, he will miss months of work, just like Christopher Nkunku did after deciding to have knee surgery. Nkunku has already missed half the season, and it is still unclear when he will return. Since he has injured his hamstring twice this season, it will be in his best interest to get surgery done and rectify the problem for good.
