Pochettino talks about Chelsea superstar’s performance in the win against Palace

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino admits that Christopher Nkunku struggled vs Crystal Palace

Taking charge as one of the most senior members of the starting XI against Crystal Palace, new Blue Christopher Nkunku made his first start for Chelsea since signing. He made his first appearance for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the last league fixture against Wolves and the win against Palace marked his first start and first win.

Unfortunately missing out on the season until now owing to injury, it was on Nkunku for making the most of the chance that came his way. Starting as the second striker behind Nicholas Jackson, the Frenchman was contributing significantly in the opening few minutes of the game.

The Frenchman played a major role in helping set up the first goal for the Blues, finding Malo Gusto on the left side who played it onto Mykhailo Mudryk in the box. The Ukrainian international, from that point, had the easiest of tasks in putting the ball beyond Dean Henderson in the Crystal Palace goal. As the game progressed, Nkunku was visibly tiring and it was clear that the player still lacked a little bit of match rhythm.

Speaking about Nkunku and his performance against Roy Hodgson’s side, here is what manager Mauricio Pochettino had to say via football.london :

“Yes, there were a few combinations that were really good. But the volume of action we need to repeat much more. It’s not just one, two, three or four in 45 minutes. I think we need him to be more involved, but it’s normal. It’s his first 70 minutes.”

“I think he was a little bit tired and struggled a little bit after 45 minutes. But it’s normal. He needs time, and to play games. He needs to adapt to the team and the players are going to connect with him.”

The manager’s assessment reflects a pragmatic understanding of Nkunku’s situation – a player recovering from injury, adapting to a new team, and still finding his rhythm on the pitch. Pochettino emphasized the need for patience and gradual integration, recognizing that Nkunku’s contribution will likely grow as he gains more playing time. He came off in the 70th minute for Noni Madueke, who scored the eventual winner for Chelsea from the spot.

Nkunku’s promising start bodes well for Chelsea, injecting a fresh dynamic into the team’s attacking prowess. The midfielder’s ability to create opportunities and link up with teammates highlights the potential he brings to Pochettino’s tactical setup. As Chelsea navigate a packed schedule and aims for success on multiple fronts, the addition of Nkunku adds depth and versatility to the squad.
