A View From The Bridge

Teenage academy defender ‘heavily involved’ in senior Chelsea training ahead of Manchester United clash

Alfie Gilchrist participated in Chelsea first team training before Manchester United game

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is set to give academy players some chance against Manchester United after injuries to first-team players have forced the manager to utilise academy players and one player in contention is Alfie Gilchrist.

According to Football.London, Alfie Gilchrist was heavily involved during Chelsea training before the game against Manchester United, and he might be on the bench to make his senior debut.

It’s good to know that Chelsea are giving chances to academy players who deserve it instead of buying young players carelessly. We should keep in mind that our youth side merits an opportunity to represent the club.

Gilchrist’s performance might have impressed the Argentine manager; that’s why he called to train with the senior side and if things turn out as per plan, then we can see him make his Chelsea debut.

The 20-year-old has made seven appearances in Premier League 2 this season and will now be aiming to make his first outing for the first team. It could be unlikely that he might not make his debut given that we are going against a strong side and Pochettino doesn’t want to lose this important game.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino knows how to develop youth.

We recovered from our 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United and won 3-2 against Brighton & Hove Albion, hopefully making it two wins in a row. We could see the same lineup once again, which faced Brighton, or maybe Raheem Sterling might be on the left this time.

Pochettino could wait for the right moment to hand Gilchrist his debut; this might happen in the closing minutes as our first-team defender starts the contest. It will be exciting to see the club’s young player get a chance to make an impact on the game after such a long absence. Our excellent academy deserves special attention so it can grow.

The 51-year-old is undoubtedly monitoring them and will make calls to those he believes should get the opportunity to play for the senior team in the future.
