A View From The Bridge

27-year-old centre-back hopeful of ‘2024 Euros berth’ set to snub Chelsea switch

Jonathan Tah set to turn down move to Chelsea to remain at Bayern Leverkusen

According to Metro, Manchester United and Chelsea’s pursuit of Jonathan Tah hits a snag as the centre-back is expected to reject both teams in favour of staying at Bayern Leverkusen come January.

The German club is set to reject proposals from both clubs midway through the season, while Tah is convinced that he wants to continue at the club despite plenty of interest.

The 27-year-old, who spent eight years at Leverkusen, wants to help his side win silverware under Spanish manager Alonso. He doesn’t have any intention to leave the club and is hoping to secure a call-up in the Germany squad for 2024 Euros.

The centre-back was available for grabs this summer, but no side showed interest in activating his release clause, which was £15 million in his contract.

However, now Premier League sides Chelsea and United have expressed interest in signing, but it seems like Tah wants to remain at Leverkusen, who are currently at the top of the Bundesliga League.

Tah is now an indispensable part of Xabi Alonso, featuring 12 times for his side. Leverkusen will look to break Bayern Munich’s dominance in the German league as they hope to secure the title this season.

His performance has piqued interest from the likes of United, Newcastle United, West Ham, and Chelsea. But they are all set to be rebuffed after the player decides to remain at the German club.

Honestly, Tah isn’t a perfect defender for us and it’s doubtful that he will play to his full potential in the Premier League. Despite his good experience and age of 27, his performance has drawn criticism. We should not necessarily go for someone just because they have a reasonable release clause. His performance needs to be evaluated, but he isn’t that great to be pursued.

When a player puts on a standout performance—which Tah hasn’t—you demonstrate interest in him. Given our questionable transfer strategy under the current ownership, we ought to reevaluate our interest in Tah.
