Alan Shearer feels Mauricio Pochettino has received unfair criticism at Chelsea

Reece James was sent off after foul on Anthony Gordon in Chelsea’s 4-1 humiliation to Newcastle United

Alan Shearer believes Anthony Gordon was fundamental in Newcastle United’s 4-1 triumph over Chelsea. The 22-year-old scored the fourth goal to wrap up the game. The 22-year-old’s performance was the highlight of the game, as he continued testing Chelsea’s resilience until the very end when he got his deserving goal.

Gordon troubled Chelsea’s defence the entire game, and his assist in the 60th saw Jamaal Lascelles put Newcastle United ahead. There was more to come in the match.

Gordon then forced Reece James to foul him when he won the ball back, and the Chelsea left-back, who was already on a yellow card, was shown a second yellow in the 73rd minute. The former Everton player’s persistence paid off in the 83rd minute, as he scored Tyneside’s fourth goal to ensure the victory.

The former Newcastle striker acknowledged Gordon’s performance and gave his opinion on his display against the West Londoners, (h/t BBC), saying:

“Chelsea were terrible in the second half. I think Newcastle made them play terrible by the way they pressed. Gordon seems to be really enjoying his time in Newcastle, and he thought he was really great and caused James loads of problems. James got frustrated, and that’s what led to him being sent off.”

Gordon was the highlight of the game, who completely disorganised and caused problems for our defenders, especially for James, who had a rough game against him. Although James could have prevented that reckless foul, he chose not to, which might have led to another goal for them. We can’t hold the right-back solely responsible for this.

The former Everton player’s efforts were rewarded when he eventually scored his goal. However, we ought to have performed better. Our defence was unable to stop him. With a goal and assist he proved too much for us and it was frustrating to witness. It was a fairly poor performance, and we hope to take away some useful lessons from that defeat.
