Once Sir Jim Ratcliffe takes over the stake in Manchester United, they are set to follow Chelsea’s approach of hiring different sports directors. According to TalkSport, (h/t Mirror) the 71-year-old intends to imitate Chelsea’s manoeuvre of appointing several sporting directors.
Before starting his work, Ratcliffe has already started making the decisions, and John Murtough is facing the axe. Both Paul Mitchell and Dougie Freedman have been linked with permanent roles in Ratcliffe’s planned overhaul.
Meanwhile, Boehly has two sporting directors. Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart at Stamford Bridge, and both of them have used a pragmatic way of signing players by providing them with extended contracts, arguing costs are being diluted over a number of seasons.
Just a year after his takeover of Chelsea, Todd Boehly has already become a prominent figure in the Premier League, having spent a mammoth £1 billion. His spending and signing of only young players have come under scrutiny, with the Blues already operating under a fourth manager.
Surprisingly, Ratcliffe was also linked with becoming the owner of the London club before the American businessman won the bid. Ratcliffe’s taking over of minority stakeholders will be confirmed on Thursday. Chelsea’s approach have paid dividends in signing young players, but if you’re signing, then you will have to be patient with their growth.
United would like to follow Chelsea’s strategy, but there are a lot of things to consider before implementing any club’s transfer window policies. Before signing a player, you must first have effective communication with the management and the board because the head coach will additionally pick the players he wants.
From top to bottom, there should be continuous interaction. Because Boehly eventually involved himself in the transfer window to persuade players—something that Glazers, the owners of United, had hardly ever done before.
There can be disagreements between the two sporting directors’ ideas; therefore, United need to exercise caution. It has gone well at Chelsea, where transfers have been completed without any issues.
