Championship manager sounds warning to Chelsea over defensive target: "It would take a lot of money"
Chelsea captain Reece James has ruled out a move to Manchester City after Pep Guardiola identified James as a potential replacement for Kyle Walker.
According to 90min, (h/t Manchester Evening News), the Chelsea right-back is committed to Chelsea after his sister Lauren James, who plays for Women’s Chelsea, is fully devoted to helping the Blues become the top Premier League club.
Walker recently signed a new contract, but the Spanish manager is a big admirer of James and feels he is the perfect candidate to replace the 33-year-old at City.
James has recently returned from a hamstring injury he sustained in the season’s opening 1-1 draw against Liverpool. But in order to relieve some of the pressure on James, the Blues signed Malo Gusto, who has settled in well and performed admirably in James’ absence.
Chelsea hopes to remain cautious with James’ injury, considering he is still not fully fit to play the entire game, and we need to keep in mind that putting a load on him can see him relapse.
He earned the start in last Sunday’s exhilarating 4-4 draw with Manchester City, as the Blues continue their positive progress under Mauricio Pochettino. The way the right-back was able to hold off Jeremy Doku, who has been City’s best threat, tells a lot about James’ ability to excel in these big games.
He has now stated unequivocally that he has no intention of joining City in order to become a real Chelsea player. Hopefully, he will stay for many years to come and follow in the footsteps of John Terry and Frank Lampard as great players. If he can avoid injuries, the 23-year-old has all the makings of one of Chelsea’s greatest players.
Guardiola ought to search elsewhere because Chelsea is unlikely to part with their finest player. Given how talented Walker is and the knowledge that he is still a key player for City at this age, finding a successor for him will be extremely challenging.
