Liverpool icon Glen Johnson feels Victor Osimhen could struggle to score goals at Chelsea if he joins them in January, as he believes they are in a transition period. He further commented that even Erling Haaland would struggle to score goals right away for Chelsea had he joined them.
The Blues are among the frontrunners to sign the Nigerian striker and want to make a move in January and Osimhen is said to be open to joining them.
After joining Manchester City for the 2022-23 season, Haaland has been scoring goals relentlessly. He has now scored 71 goals this year, a phenomenal milestone for a striker who plays in the Premier League.
However, the Serie A club doesn’t want their main striker to leave in the middle of the campaign, but a tempting offer could change their mind. Napoli have slapped a £100 million price tag on Osimhen, so the Blues once again have to shell out that much.
Johnson was speaking to GGrecon and shared his opinion on Osimhen’s potential move to Chelsea, (h/t Express), he said:
“It’s tough for strikers to move to struggling sides and start banging in goals straight away; that’s difficult for anyone to do. For example, if Erling Haaland joined Chelsea in January, he wouldn’t score the same number of goals he’s scoring now.”
“It’s hard to assume that Victor’s going to start banging in goals from day one if the move happens, but I think he will score goals in the Premier League, and the league will suit him.”
Haaland would have had a difficult time scoring goals if he had joined us the previous season since we had weaknesses in every aspect and the manager who came and went didn’t provide us with the right direction. However, we have significantly upgraded this season, and the goals have also begun to materialise. Every player at Chelsea has blossomed under Mauricio Pochettino, each setting their own standards.
Now that he will have superior support from our other players, any established striker who joins us will be able to compete with other centre-forwards. Undoubtedly, we are going through a transitional time, but we have begun to score goals, and Chelsea are third in terms of huge chances missed, meaning that we produced a lot of chances but our lack of efficiency in front of goal has hurt us. However, a seasoned striker, such as Osimhen or Haaland, will make those opportunities count.
