Andy Townsend has given a damning verdict on Chelsea’s current form and claimed that even if they had Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, they would still not win the Premier League title under Mauricio Pochettino.
The Blues’ last Premier League title win came in 2017 under Antonio Conte, and this season it’s challenging to see them secure the title as they sit in 11th place, 14 points behind the top spot.
The Blues have not won the league title even though they won the Champions League in 2021. Since 2017, a lot of things have transpired in terms of ownership, and numerous managers have come and gone.
Since the arrival of Todd Boehly, the club has spent £1 billion in three windows, with Pochettino in charge of the club. Former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan can see the Blues win the title in as little as two years, but it won’t be under Pochettino.
However, the former Chelsea star wasn’t convinced by Jordan’s comments and responded to the claim of the former Palace chairman, (h/t Express) Townsend said in talkSPORT:
“That is some statement; I don’t see that at all. Not unless they sign Mbappe and three [players] of that level. If Chelsea had Mbappe and Bellingham in this current team, would they win the league? Of course they wouldn’t; no chance!”
Pundits have the freedom to express any view they want. We have heard a lot of these viewpoints, and occasionally it’s humorous because they are already beginning to see the bad aspects of the season. If you watched the game, you could see how significantly Chelsea’s performance has evolved. However, the reason we lost is that we lack a clinical No. 9, and if we have one, we will be able to compete with teams such as Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal.
It’s a crazy remark we’ve heard that even with Mbappe and Bellingham, we wouldn’t win the league. It’s not something that is factually correct though so we don’t need to worry about it.
