Opponent Watch: Why Lewis Hall is sidelined for Newcastle vs Chelsea

Newcastle United loanee Lewis Hall is ruled out of the Premier League game against Chelsea

Chelsea loanee Lewis Hall is ineligible to feature for Newcastle United in this weekend’s clash against the Blues. The 19-year-old swapped Stamford Bridge for Tyneside last summer and has made five appearances in white and black so far across all competitions.

This is the first time that Hall will go up against his parent side since moving to Newcastle. However, he will not be able to influence the proceedings on the pitch and will have to watch on from the sidelines.

Chelsea drew 4-4 against defending champions Manchester City last time around and will be keen to keep their good run going. A win over Newcastle will not just help build momentum but also land a direct blow to a side also challenging for a top-four spot.

According to football.london, the young defender is ineligible to face his parent side on the night. A left-back, Hall is capable of also playing further up the field if needed. Had he been eligible to feature, the youngster could have come up against Cole Palmer, Chelsea’s in-form new boy on the bloc.

It would have been a solid trial by fire for Hall, giving both teams a clear idea of his undoubted potential. But that day will now have to wait. The youngster has a £28 million obligation to buy in his loan deal, meaning he will be a Newcastle player on a full-time basis come the summer of 2024.

Hall’s absence is another blow for Eddie Howe who has a lengthy list of absentees for the game. Former Chelsea starlet, Tino Livramento is capable of playing at left-back and could get the nod on the night. The 21-year-old left Chelsea in 2021 and spent two seasons at Southampton before moving to Tyneside earlier this summer.

Hall was one of our best young talents but given the options in the senior roster, the Blues opted to cash in on him last summer. Fans will be eager to see how the move to Newcastle and out in the long run.
