Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has hinted that Blues skipper Reece James could return against local rivals Tottenham Hotspur but remains unsure if he will be fit to start on Monday night.
James has been out since suffering a hamstring injury in training in August. But after making his comeback from the bench in Cabarao Cup’s clash against Blackburn Rovers, Pochettino talked up the right-back’s importance and whether he would be available in the Tottenham clash.
“It was good for him to start a game after a few months, he’s a very important player.”
While not definitive, Pochettino’s comments suggest the England international could be in contention. But when pressed for a clear answer, the manager admitted James’ availability is still uncertain. He revealed the same via football.london.
“I don’t know. We’ll see. We’ll see if he’s available.”
After two months on the sidelines, Pochettino is keen not to rush James back too quickly. However, with Chelsea struggling for results, the prospect of recalling their defensive leader is enticing.
Reece James‘ versatility, energy, and quality on the ball could transform the Blues’ disjointed displays. Pochettino has decided to be cautious with the 23-year-old upon his return to avoid aggravating the injury. While the 23-year-old’s impact cannot be questioned, injuries have largely impacted his availability over the last two seasons.
But Monday’s clash with high-flying Tottenham represents an opportunity Pochettino may feel is worth the risk. Chelsea have sorely missed James’ well-rounded talents during his extended absence. Chelsea are currently sitting at 11th place in the Premier League rankings having just won three of their 10 games. James’ return amid this poor run will definitely provide some relief to Pochettino.
Defender Benoit Badiashile also played his first match in the clash against Blackburn having spent 172 days in the sidelines. He gave a solid performance, scoring Chelsea’s opener and securing a 100 percent duel success rate and a 95 percent pass accuracy. His presence in the Spurs clash will certainly be a huge boost to the Blues.
Mauricio Pochettino and the club’s medical staff face a huge call on whether James is ready for 90 minutes against Spurs. But the defender’s availability would hand Chelsea a major boost as they aim to revive their stuttering season by defeating fierce rivals.
