Manchester United are giving serious thought to signing Chelsea outcast Trevoh Chalobah
Manchester United are giving serious thought to launching a bid for Chelsea outcast Trevoh Chalobah as we near the 2024 January transfer window.
The 24-year-old defender has fallen sharply down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge this season. However, according to TEAMtalk (h/t Manchester Evening News), United view Chalobah as an intriguing option to strengthen their backline.
The Red Devils recognize the need for reinforcements at centre-back under Erik ten Hag. Lisandro Martinez is out injured for long while Raphael Varane has also struggled with concerns this season. Harry Maguire remains inconsistent while they can also surely do better than Jonny Evans.
However, prising the England youth international from Chelsea may prove difficult despite his exile. He had rejected a move to Nottingham Forest in this summer window, signifying his desire to stay and fight for a spot. However, given the lack of playing time, it is debatable if Chalobah’s decision will do him much good.
Blues fans will not be happy to see another academy product sold off after Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Lewis Hall, and Mason Mount. Selling to United would only intensify outrage at another homegrown prospect being discarded. However, given the competition for spots in our bloated squad, something’s gotta give.
Chalobah made his senior debut for Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel. It is said that the two of them share a positive relationship and a reunion at the Allianz Arena might be on the cards. Borussia Dortmund are also in the fray. The Bundesliga has helped hone several English youth stars of late and surely Chalobah too can benefit from the same.
With his contract not expiring until 2028, Chelsea holds the leverage regarding negotiations. But United’s need for defensive reinforcements makes Chalobah a compelling mid-term target. Rather than short-term patchwork options, Ten Hag will now want players who can grow over time into regular starters.
Chelsea are regularly getting riddled with injuries. Including Chalobah, the Blues are now currently missing 3 first-team defenders. The Sierra Leone-born Chalobah is currently ruled out indefinitely for sustaining a hamstring injury in training. If Pochettino manages to sign a good defender

At 24 years old, Chalobah offers the long-term upside that should intrigue United. Hopefully, Chelsea too can recoup a decent fee that we can then re-invest into the squad.
