Jamie Carragher feels Chelsea forward Cole Palmer could be replaced by Anthony Gordon in England squad
Cole Palmer has been warned by Jamie Carragher that Anthony Gordon is a strong contender to take his England spot in the next Euro 2024 after his performance in the Newcastle United 4-1 win over Chelsea.
Palmer received his first-ever senior call-up during the November international break. The Three Lions have already secured their place in next year’s Euro, and Gareth Southgate will look to give a chance to other players.
Palmer joined Chelsea in the summer window and has accumulated four goals in 11 games for the Blues. The 21-year-old has become a regular starter under Mauricio Pochettino.
However, the Newcastle game raised some doubts about Pochettino’s side’s inconsistent performance, and the Argentine manager didn’t hold back and accused his side of being too soft against the Magpies.
However, Palmer has been warned by Carragher, who feels his England spot could be in danger if he fails to remain consistent throughout the season, (h/t Football.London) Speaking to Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show, he said:
“Cole Palmer was in the last squad, and he has been outstanding since he has gone to Chelsea. But if you go back to the summer where this great form for Gordon started, you probably go back to the under-21 tournament in the summer where England won the tournament; he was the best player, and Cole Palmer was actually on the bench.”
“In some ways, Palmer has overtaken him in terms of getting into the England squad, which is maybe a little bit harsh, but for me, if he continues to how he is going, I think it could be a toss up between him and Cole Palmer.”
Palmer’s Chelsea performances earned him a spot in the England squad, which was legitimate. Since joining the Blues, he has already scored four goals, which is definitely a reason for a call-up to the national team.

Palmer will continue to spearhead Chelsea’s offensive onslaught as a key member of the team. Meanwhile, Gordon has been impressive this season with five goals and three assists in 12 games so both players will have a chance to represent England next Euro if they continue their excellent performances throughout the next season.
