A View From The Bridge

“I’m not talking about Arteta” – Mauricio Pochettino talks about PL managers’ reaction to VAR

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino takes jibe at Premier League managers’ criticism of VAR

Mauricio Pochettino wasn’t having it this time and called out the other managers who weren’t happy with VAR’s decisions this season. VAR played a significant role in the London Derby after five goals were disallowed and two red cards were awarded.

Chelsea had three goals disallowed for offside, while Tottenham had two. Nevertheless, the Blues got better off Spurs and secured three points with a 4-1 win.

Both teams had numerous opportunities, making it one of the most fascinating games of the season. Spurs had an early lead for most of the match, but Chelsea seized control after they were down to nine players.

Nicolas Jackson scored his first hattrick for Chelsea in London Derby.

Cristian Romero was the first to be awarded a straight red card in the 33rd minute for plunging on Enzo Fernande, and Destiny Udogie received a second yellow card in the 55th minute for a careless foul on Raheem Sterling.

From there, it was a turning point for Chelsea after they took control of the game and scored three more goals through Nicolas Jackson in the space of 20 minutes.

Following the match, the Argentine spoke to the press and was asked if VAR was against Spurs today. He told BeanymanSports, quoted by Fabrizio Romano:

“Too many coaches wanted VAR… And now, when it’s against you, ah, no! It’s a disgrace; it’s difficult. I’m not talking about Arteta, eh.”.

Mauricio Pochettino takes a swipe at other managers for criticising Var.

The use of VAR proved to be crucial in yesterday’s match, as it correctly called a penalty when Fernandez was fouled inside Tottenham’s area. Given that VAR has made several questionable decisions this season that have affected the managers, we were thankful that we weren’t unlucky with their terrible decision.

It’s definitely not a dig at Mikel Arteta, whose team wrongly lost 1-0 to Newcastle United after Gabriel Magalhães was fouled in the build-up to their goal before the ball already went out of play, and the goal stood despite the VAR check.
