Harry Redknapp is one who can identify a good team and it would appear he believes Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer are making a telling difference to the side’s fortunes of late.
Both players have been standout performers in recent weeks as Mauricio Pochettino’s side slowly yet surely find their feet. This has seen them rise up the standings and also inflict Tottenham Hotspur’s first defeat of the campaign. While the performances still leave much to be desired, there is promise in the system that is being employed.
Chelsea next face Newcastle United this weekend, a major rival in our hopes of finishing in the top four. A win will not just give us a massive confidence boost but also potentially help us win the mentality battle ahead of the Carabao Cup quarterfinal against the same opponent.
Speaking to BetVictor (h/t football.london), Redknapp admitted that Chelsea are finally looking like a proper team with a proper system. He attributed much of it to the two wide-men in the playing XI, Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer. The cutting edge the duo provide has seen us show more bite up front.
“Chelsea have been scoring goals in recent weeks. Four at Spurs, four at home to City, Poch is finding a system and an 11 that is working for him. I like the balance of the two wingers, Sterling on one side and Palmer on the other.”
Both players impressed against Tottenham and also more recently against Manchester City. Palmer scored an injury-time penalty to hold his former side to a point and has enjoyed an inspirational start to life at Stamford Bridge.
Newcastle are a solid team who have built themselves a reputation under Eddie Howe. They will be dogged opponents this weekend and will provide us with a stern test. A win will certainly help Pochettino’s cause and also help the Blues build momentum heading into the busy December period.
Redknapp, for his part, believes Chelsea hold the upper hand and has predicted a close win for the Blues on the night. Hopefully, his words come true and we celebrate another step in the right direction against the Magpies.
“I wouldn’t have said this a month ago, but I’m saying it now, 2-1 to Chelsea”
Chelsea have brought in several new players and it was bound to take them some time to get all the parts of the squad ticking. We are slowly yet surely getting there and one can thank Sterling and Palmer for the role they are playing in ensuring that happens.
