Chelsea star Mykhaylo Mudryk was fouled in stoppage time as Italy thwart Ukraine’s Euro 2024 qualifying chances
Chelsea star Mykhaylo Mudryk had a penalty ruled out late into stoppage time as Italy secured their berth in Euro 2024 (h/t X). The Azzurri only needed to avoid a defeat to secure their place in next year’s Euros, and they were successful in doing so.
The reigning champions needed a point to qualify for Euro 2024; failing to do so would have resulted in another setback after they missed out on reaching the 2022 FIFA World Cup last year. But the sides had to settle for a draw, which confirmed Italy’s place at Euro 2024. Ukraine’s hopes of reaching the tournament now rest on a play-off in March.
Ukraine had appeals in stoppage time when Mudryk was manhandled by Bryan Cristante in the opposition box, but the Azzurri survived a late heartbreak to confirm their place at Euro 2024.
Ukraine were the better side throughout the entire game but lacked that potency in front of the goal. Mudryk was a great threat for Italy on the left wing, giving their defence a tough time during the game. But they failed, and they ought to have profited from their lost opportunities. However, they have been granted another opportunity to qualify for the tournament.
During the entire game, Mudryk was radiant. His quick surges and confidence while possessing the ball allowed him to dribble past their opposition several times, giving the impression that they were vulnerable. This season, his confidence has only grown, and when he gets more opportunities, it will undoubtedly pay off. Though it was disappointing that he was unable to shepherd them to victory, they will get another chance in March.
