David Datro Fofana scored his first-ever goal for Union Berlin in Champions League game with Napoli

Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana was on the scoresheet in the Union Berlin 1-1 draw against Napoli. The striker scored his first goal since his loan move to a German club.

Fofana cancelled Matteo Politano’s earlier strike to give the German side their first point in the group stage as they remain last on the table, which contains Real Madrid, SC Braga and Napoli.

The Spanish club has already qualified, while Napoli had a chance to boost their hopes of qualification for the last 16 but were held to a 1-1 draw with Berlin.

Fofana earlier had a brawl with the manager after he was substituted and subsequently was banned for a game, but the striker bounced back and gave the head coach a reason to give him a start in such important games.

Although the forward has made nine appearances in the Bundesliga, he has not yet scored a goal. However, a Champions League goal will provide the forward with the much-needed impetus to carry on with his goal-scoring form.

Chelsea will be monitoring his progress. Armando Broja and Nicolas Jackson are the Blues’ current starting forwards. If Fofana continues to play well in the end, the team may see him back next season.

Since Fofana is still only 20 years old and has a long season ahead of him, Chelsea should be patient with his development and give him time to prove himself before allowing him to rejoin the team. Bringing him back could be risky because the team is searching for an experienced striker for the upcoming campaign. This could hamper his game time and growth, as they will have many options in the No. 9 slot.

Therefore, it would be preferable for the team to give him an extra season to develop. Then, whenever the team determines he is ready to return as a regular goal scorer, they can bring him back.
