Chelsea have come under huge scrutiny after the club was found guilty of breaching Premier League rules with several secret payments under former owner Roman Abramovich.
According to the Guardian, the club was investigated by the international partners and now fears facing punishment, which could be a points deduction.
Chelsea are already in 10th, and a reduction of points could see them lie in the bottom half of the table, which will make it difficult for Mauricio Pochettino to recover the club from the relegation zone.
A report confirmed that several files which contained the details of payments totalling tens of millions of pounds over a decade, were routed through offshore vehicles belonging to Abramovich. Some of those payments have been connected to Eden Hazard, Willian, Samuel Eto’o, and 2016 title-winning manager Antonio Conte.
The payment was found by an international investigation named Cyprus Confidential, a cache of 3.6 million offshore records revealed to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and Germany’s Paper Trail Media, which spread the access to the Guardian, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ), and other media.
The club’s expenditures are also being investigated from 2012 to 2019. The new club owner reported to the authority for “incomplete financial information.”
If the Premier League takes any action that results in a deduction of points, we will be in serious trouble because it would cause us to fall farther down the standings, which will lessen our chances of making it into the Champions League the following season. Players and the club will both be further impacted by the point reduction.
It looks like the club committed a significant violation while its previous owners were in charge, and we will probably be punished heavily as a result. Let’s hope the league takes into account their choice and only issues a warning to us.
