Chelsea defender Levi Colwill was ruled out of the Manchester City clash with a shoulder injury
Chelsea defender Levi Colwill was unavailable for selection in the Blues’ Premier League clash against Manchester City due to a shoulder injury, manager Mauricio Pochettino had confirmed.
The 20-year-old had started every league match this season under Pochettino but was forced to miss the City game after picking up the problem. Speaking ahead of the match in an interview covered by the Standard, Pochettino revealed his star defender’s injury problems.
With Colwill sidelined, Marc Cucurella slotted into the left-back role as Chelsea aimed to contain the reigning champions at Stamford Bridge. It was a high-octane match where both sides scored four goals each.
Colwill’s absence comes at an inopportune time with the England international squad set to assemble ahead of matches against Malta and North Macedonia. It remains to be seen whether the shoulder issue will rule Colwill out of linking up with the Three Lions during this international window.
But the youngster’s injury comes as another blow to England boss Gareth Southgate, who is already without James Maddison, Callum Wilson, and likely Jude Bellingham due to fitness issues. For Chelsea, losing Colwill for any period of time is also far from ideal given the 20-year-old’s ever-growing importance at left-back. Colwill has started every Premier League game under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
