A View From The Bridge

Alan Shearer lauds ‘magnificent’ performance from Chelsea star in Manchester City draw

Alan Shearer praises Cole Palmer’s performance in Chelsea 4-4 draw with Manchester City

Chelsea signed Cole Palmer from Manchester City last summer, and the same player secured a draw for the Blues in a thrilling 4-4 draw with Pep Guardiola’s side.

And Alan Shearer was highly impressed with the former Manchester City forward, who was excellent throughout the game. Those who watched the game will certainly understand why the Premier League is the best in football.

The night was full of chaos and nervousness for both fans, who saw their side showing no sign of losing. Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 25th minute with a spot kick; four minutes later, Thiago Silva headed the ball home.

Alan Shearer was highly intrigued by Cole Palmer’s performance against Manchester City.

Raheem Sterling put the Blues in front in the 37th minute, but Manuel Akanji cancelled Sterling’s goal in the 45th minute. In just two minutes of the second-half resumption, Haaland put the City ahead, but Nicolas Jackson levelled the score in the 67th minute.

When Rodri scored in the 86th minute, it appeared City would take the three points home, but a penalty in the 95th minute saw Cole Palmer calmly put the ball in the net as both sides shared spoils in the goal-galore contest.

Shearer was impressed by Palmer’s performance, lauded his display against his former side, (h/t Daily Mail), and told BBC Match of the Day 2:

“One of the impressive things about him is that he always tries to pass forward. His first thought is, Can he do that? Can he run forward? There was nothing short of it being magnificent when he had the ball. Offering himself when under pressure and then driving forward and setting Chelsea into really good positions.”

Shearer’s assessment of Palmer is accurate in every way, and Chelsea are extremely fortunate to have acquired him from City. At just 21, a player with such quality is extremely remarkable in football, and the Blues have acquired a talented player who could go on to become Chelsea’s future star.

Palmer’s poise when handling the ball is unmatched, and his aptitude for locating teammates and creating space is commendable. His ability to draw attention from the opposition frees up room for other players to take the ball forward. Palmer nearly scored the Premier League goal of the month as we waltzed past City players, but Ederson stopped him. If it had gone in, it would have been the season’s best goal.
