“What was wrong?”- Pundit questions Chelsea’s decision to loan out Romelu Lukaku to AS Roma

Joe Cole criticism Chelsea’s decision to send Romelu Lukaku on loan to AS Roma

Joe Cole has questioned Chelsea’s decision to loan out Romelu Lukaku to AS Roma in the summer window after the striker’s relationship with the Blues deteriorated.

Since his loan move to Roma, the forward has now scored eight goals in 10 appearances, which obviously raises questions about how the Blues let him go despite their own goalscoring issues. However, the gravity of the situation is more than that, and if we look beyond goals, Lukaku was never meant to be at Chelsea for what he did.

Joe Cole questions Chelsea loaning out Romelu Lukaku.

When he joined in 2021, he started the season with great form, which eventually dipped, and when he struggled to perform, he called out Thomas Tuchel’s system and openly said he wanted to return to Inter Milan in an interview.

The Blues were tolerant of the Belgian striker and still let him play, which is a big thing. But since the next summer, we have been looking to offload him permanently,

Bringing him back even if he continues with his current form won’t be sensible because he doesn’t want to return and the club wouldn’t want him. But Joe Cole feels Chelsea made an honest mistake by allowing him to leave, given the forward’s current form, (h/t Football. London), as he said:

“With Romelu Lukaku, for all of his faults, he was at the door. He was a success at Inter Milan; he scored goals at Everton and West Brom in this country; why couldn’t he score goals at Chelsea? What was wrong with him?

Should Chelsea bring back Lukaku to the club?

His attitude was the main problem. He was never a loyal player to a team. Forget criticising us he ditched Inter and started talks with Juventus for a possible move. We should have been more harsh on him after what he said in that interview but we were too kind with him and still allowed him to play for us. Lukaku’s return to Chelsea is never on the cards and we better look for other options.

We are better without him, and instead of bringing him, we should look for other options. Preferably, Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen. Both are in their 20s and are more consistent than Lukaku.
