“We were worried” – Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has his say on the injury situation at the club

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino talks about the club’s injury crisis

Mauricio Pochettino has opened up on how he was worried about Chelsea and their growing list of injuries before becoming manager of the club. The Argentine manager was appointed after the end of the 2022-23 season.

The club has been hit by an injury crisis, with several players out injured and Ben Chilwell a new addition to the list with a hamstring injury. However, the Argentine manager doesn’t want to use this as an excuse for the club’s poor start to the new season, with just one win in six Premier League games.

But injuries to key players have evidently spoilt the plans of the manager and threw a spanner in the works immediately after pre-season ended. The injuries to the likes of Christopher Nkunku,Wesley Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka, Benoit Badiashile, and Romeo Lavia have affected the club’s performance.

The former Southampton manager has spoken about how, before taking charge of Chelsea, (h/t Express) Pochettino was worried about the club’s injuries and said:

“It was something we were worried about before we arrived here. We are working with the club to improve our infrastructure to give the players a better platform to work and avoid injury. We assessed it before we arrived here.”

Mauricio Pochettino’s inability to line up with his preferred personnel is primarily caused by injuries to important players. We saw how good the Blues were in the preseason when all the players were available, but when some of them suffered long-term injuries, he had to adjust his strategy to create a cohesive unit for the games.

We cannot hold Pochettino responsible for that, and we have no idea why the players continue to sustain injuries while being fully cleared to play – case in point – Reece James and Ben Chilwell. Since the majority of the injured players are regular starters, we hope we notice a big difference in results once everyone is back.
