“I now have a family, I have children”- Chelsea superstar speaks about his future with contract set to expire in 2024

Thiago Silva says he is unsure whether he will continue at Chelsea next season

Thiago Silva has given a coy reply on his future at Chelsea, as his contract is set to expire after the end of the current campaign and the Blues will respect him if he wants to return to his childhood club, Fluminense.

Silva extended his contract in February of this year and will later have a big decision to make once his deal expires. What the next step will be in his playing career is unknown. The former Paris Saint-Germain has featured in all of Chelsea’s games this season under Mauricio Pochettino, serving as a fundamental player at the heart of the defence.

At 39, he has remained an imperative figure at the club, but there is a chance he could return to the Brazilian club, though Silva is not committing to it just yet. Regarding his future at Chelsea, Silva didn’t specify whether he wants to stay beyond the end of his contract or go back to Fluminense, (h/t Metro) although he did say:

‘’I now have a family; I have children. So we have to think about this aspect too. It’s about seeing where things can bring us happiness to finish this beautiful and successful career that I believe I have achieved.’’

The Brazilian ace has spent the last 14 years in Europe, playing for several of the continent’s top players. He represented Fluminense in his homeland from 2007-2009 and it remains to be seen if he will return to Brazil to call it curtains on an impressive career.

It’s highly noteworthy that he is still performing at a high level at age 39. Silva is a starter at that age, which is unquestionably commendable considering that the majority of players go to less demanding leagues or retire.

It will be important for him to finish his career on his terms, and we hope that since joining us from PSG, he has found contentment here. It will be up to him to make a big decision about his playing career at Chelsea once his contract expires.

Although Chelsea will be glad to keep Silva for another year. If the other two of our centre-backs are fit again, Silva’s playing time may be limited. But could be happy to act as a backup defender and become their mentor at Chelsea.
