Eden Hazard at Chelsea was one of a kind. There is a case to be made that at one point of his career, he was the third best player in the world behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, in no particular order. There were aspects of his game where you could argue that he was even better than those two.
As much as we love time-travel movies, sadly, in real-life, we still don’t have a time machine. Assuming that a machine did exist though, if Eden Hazard can go back to the summer of 2019, would he do anything differently?
It was the Belgian’s dream to play for Real Madrid. When the Spanish giants came calling, he realized that he had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He had achieved a lot at Chelsea and maybe it was the best time to move on to a new challenge.
What people tend to forget is that despite some criticism upon arriving in Madrid with regards to his weight, the Belgian dazzled in his first few months. The goals and assists might not have come like they did in Chelsea, but he was at his imperious best when it came to dribbling and his playmaking.
Football is always an easy sport to be analyzed in hindsight, but one can’t help but wonder if Hazard’s Madrid career would have turned out differently had he not been at the receiving end of that horrific tackle by Thomas Meunier.
Since then, nothing has been the same for Eden Hazard and he left Madrid in the summer upon terminating his contract. Recently, he announced his retirement from the game that he absolutely owned at one point of time at the very young age of 32.
Speaking about why he retired, Hazard explained that he stopped enjoying the sport and that it was the right time to call it quits, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano (via L’Avenir)
“I always said that I would stop playing as soon as I no longer had fun on the field. I didn’t want to go play somewhere for the money. I didn’t enjoy training… and I didn’t play anymore. The decision was simple”
It hurts to see the player we absolutely love and adore going out of the game in such a manner. Hazard has done so much for Chelsea over the years that he will perennially have a place etched in every Blues fan around the world. There has been no one who has caught our eye as much as the Belgian in the last 10 years.
The streets won’t forget prime Eden Hazard. The streets won’t forget the Chelsea forward playing on the left-side of attack (majorly) with a number 10 on his back absolutely dominating Premier League defences and leaving them in their wake. They don’t make such players anymore. Hazard was one of a kind and it is a shame that we did not get to see more of him.
