Report: 26-year-old Chelsea star to be out for ‘months’ rather than weeks

Chelsea veteran Ben Chilwell is facing another lengthy following hamstring injury in win over Brighton

Chelsea’s veteran defender Ben Chilwell is expected to be out long-term rather than just weeks after suffering another worrying hamstring injury according to a post from The Athletic (Subscription Required). It adds that the former Leicester City star will be out for ‘months’ rather than weeks.

Chilwell, 26, hurt his hamstring during Chelsea’s League Cup win over Brighton last Wednesday. Manager Mauricio Pochettino had admitted the seriousness of his injury saying that it “does not look good.”

“I think it is bad news, the doctor told me it is not a good thing, but we need to assess in the next few days and we will see the period he is going to be out. But it does not look good. It (the injury) was in the last minute of the game. Yes, we are really sad about the news.”

Left-back Levi Colwill has filled in for Chilwell alongside Mykhailo Mudryk in a fluid system. But losing Chilwell long-term is a major blow with team skipper Reece James also out injured.

Chelsea have battled mounting injury issues this season, with several key players still unavailable. But losing Chilwell again for a prolonged spell deals Pochettino’s squad another harsh setback.

While possessing options like Marc Cucurella to cover, Chilwell’s attacking threat down the left and his invaluable experience will be sorely missed.

Chilwell’s injury further Mauricio Pochettino’s issues at fullback for Chelsea. However, with James progressing in his recovery and expected back after the October international break, Pochettino may find some relief in regaining his starting right-back soon.

After working back from his prior hamstring trauma, Chilwell now faces another demanding recovery and rehabilitation period.

He has missed a total of 65 matches in the last season owing to various injuries. And it seems he is set to continue that tradition.

Chelsea will hope the defender can eventually overcome these persistent hamstring problems. But for now, their backline depth faces a stiff test in coping without Chilwell’s quality for the foreseeable future.
