“Nearer to it”- Manchester United legend backs Chelsea to finish above Red Devils

Gary Neville believes Chelsea will finish above Manchester United this season

Gary Neville firmly supports Chelsea and their quest to secure a top-four finish under Mauricio Pochettino, despite just three wins in eight Premier League matches.

As it stands, Chelsea occupy the 11th spot, while Manchester United linger in 10th place within the Premier League. The Blues are in the midst of a rebuilding phase, and expectations are somewhat muted.

However, things are different for Manchester United this season as they have had trouble winning games, contrary to the great expectations that were placed on Erik ten Hag’s team, which finished third in the league and won the Carabao Cup the previous season.

At the start of the new campaign, Chelsea faced concerns about their performance. However, following two consecutive victories – a rare feat nowadays – Chelsea appear to be finding their stride under Pochettino. They eagerly anticipate their upcoming clash against Arsenal on October 21st.

Former United captain Neville is optimistic that, if Chelsea maintains its current form, they can outshine United in the race for the top spots. He expressed this view on his Gary Neville Podcast:

“Chelsea, I think probably nearer to it (top 4/5), if they could just go on a run because they have some really talented young players; their age is a lot better than Manchester United’s squad.”

While it’s too early to make definitive predictions, having won only a few games, the real test lies ahead when they face top-tier teams in the upcoming matches. Many other teams share similar ambitions of securing a top-four spot, making the competition tough. Chelsea are in the midst of a rebuilding phase, and it will take time to assemble into a competitive side.

Nonetheless, those two victories have provided a much-needed confidence boost at the start of the season. Had there not been an international break in between, those two wins would have been valuable as they helped build momentum. Let’s see how the Blues return after the break though.
