Mauricio Pochettino bemoaned Chelsea weren’t nasty enough in front of the goal after the Blues suffered a 2-0 defeat to Brentford, who have remained undefeated at Stamford Bridge since their promotion.
The defeats mean Chelsea have now lost their third Premier League home game, while the Bees continued their 100% winning record at Stamford Bridge since being promoted to the Premier League. The hosts looked threatening in attack, with Cole Palmer creating two wonderful chances, but Chelsea failed to take advantage of them.
Their missed chances backfired the Blues when Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbeumo handed the Bees the win. It was frustrating for the side that should have wrapped up the match in the first half.
The West Londoners’ abysmal form has seen them win only once at Stamford Bridge in the league since March. After failing to score in their 13th match, Pochettino lamented the players’ needing to be nasty, (h/t Independent) and clinical in front of the goal and further said:
“After the first half, we should have scored, but we didn’t. When you dominate and create chances, don’t concede chances, and the opponent doesn’t cross the halfway line, we should score. If you don’t score, you need to blame ourselves. We were not nasty or clinical in front of the goal.
It’s just the same thing again and again for us. Imagine if we had scored on those missed chances. We would have been three goals up. This is how good we were in the first half, but the Bees’ first goal changed the dynamic of the match, and we never recovered from it. We did have chances to score but lacked precision as always. There is only so much Pochettino can do when players on the field control their destiny.
When you have a chance to score goals but miss it, it always backfires because the opposition will make the most of their chances and punish you. Pochettino might be tired of saying we need to be more clinical now.
