Chelsea defender Axel Disasi has disclosed that he spoke to Benoit Badiashile about the Blues before his surprise deadline-day transfer from Monaco in the summer.
Disasi followed his former Monaco teammate to Stamford Bridge in a spontaneous late move after Chelsea lost Wesley Fofana to injury. Fofana suffered a devastating ACL injury that has ruled him out for an indefinite period.
Chelsea were looking for a replacement to fill the void and decided to sign Monaco man Axel Disasi. In an interview covered by Chelsea’s official website, Disasi revealed he consulted Badiashile at once to get the lowdown on the club before signing.
“I had some questions about the group and he turned round and straight away said it’s one of really good quality, He told me about the project, and even though it’s a project, it’s still a really good side. He also said how he had already been convinced by the project and how everything was going well for him.”
Benoit Badiashile was the first port of call for Disasi when Chelsea’s interest became concrete prior to the deadline. The young French centre-back provided glowing feedback about life in West London to help convince his friend.
Disasi admits his best friends’ insights gave him the belief that Chelsea was the right move despite the club’s lack of recent success on the field.
“Since I’ve arrived, everything he’s said has been true. Yeah, it’s been a little bit shaky but it is a project and I’m in the same boat as him now as from everything I’ve seen since the start of the season, it’s been really encouraging.”
After 65 games together at Monaco, the pair are now reunited at Stamford Bridge. Disasi is confident that their strong understanding will translate seamlessly to Chelsea’s backline. The signing of Disasi was mostly motivated by Wesley Fofana’s season-ending injury, but despite the spontaneity, the Frenchman has taken well to life at Stamford Bridge.
The 25-year-old followed Badiashile’s advice by taking the leap of faith to join Chelsea’s rebuild. Though Chelsea struggled early on in the season, they have finally managed to find their groove. Mauricio Pochettino’s boys have registered three back-to-back wins while scoring 7 times in the process.
Now he hopes they can form the foundation of the Blues’ defence as they once did so effectively together in the French principality.
