Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has claimed the fans need to identify their young side, and the Blues’ players should create a bond that will take time to reap rewards in games.
Chelsea have gone through massive structural changes since the arrival of new owners. They have mainly focused on signing young players, as the Blues spent £400 million last summer and £1.1 billion since Todd Bohely took over.
It’s obvious that new signings will take time to integrate into the team and form an understanding with other players. Mauricio Pochettino is hoping to find the balance in the squad that could win games week in and out.
Former Chelsea player Zola has the same opinion, as he feels the club will take time to find their feet this season once fans have an infinity with new signings, as he told The Times (h/t Metro):
‘’The supporters don’t identify with these players yet. There are a lot of new players, young ones, and they are not fulfilling the expectations of the supporters, and that is creating, let’s say, dissatisfaction. When you invest so much money and bring in so many new players, the risk is that you don’t form a group because it’s difficult. The players have to create a bond. It takes time.”
Zola was a fan favourite who built a solid rapport with the Blues faithful. He knows full well the advantage the club can have if those on and off the field are united in a common purpose. Hopefully, Mauricio Pochettino and Co. too reap the benefits of such an approach soon enough.
We have a large roster, and half of the players are injured, while the other youngsters who have played thus far are still finding their feet. Fans must understand that because our players are young and developing, there will be fluctuations in their performance. Patience is the key as it will take time for them to fulfil their potential.
Pochettino hopes to assemble a balanced team, and he did so during preseason. However, Christopher Nkunku’s injury interrupted it, and he is currently using a different approach. He has shown confidence in Mykhaylo Mudryk, who has made progress and will continue to do so as each game goes on, and that is how other players will grow.
