Romano highlights two positions Chelsea will look to strengthen in January; drops Victor Osimhen update

Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea will look to add another centre-back and a striker in January

According to Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive briefing on Caught Offside, Chelsea are interested in signing a striker and a centre-back during the January transfer window, with Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen being their options for the No. 9 spot.

Finding a reliable centre-forward who can score goals consistently has been Chelsea’s main dilemma. The Blues feel that they need another experienced No. 9 this time around, even though they signed Nicolas Jackson last summer. The youngster has promise but his lack of cutting edge shows.

Toney and Osimhen seem like a good fit, but they will undoubtedly have competition for their services. Both Toney and the Nigerian striker are being courted by numerous Premier League teams. Proven goalscorers, they are an upgrade over who we have right now.

Chelsea don’t really need to add any more centre-backs because they have an abundance of options available to them. The No. 9 role is the only one they ought to strengthen on a priority basis. Now transfer guru Romano has given insights on Chelsea’s January transfer plan. He said:

“With Chelsea, a new striker for sure will be discussed ahead of January, while a new centre-back can be a possibility in case they find an opportunity but they’re not desperate to get one; it depends on the market opportunities, so I can’t give names for the moment, but they have excellent directors, so I’m sure they will find good options if that’s what they decide.”

“For the striker position, we already know about links with Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen, and for sure either of them would be top signings. For Osimhen, however, I still think a January move away from Napoli is looking difficult.”

Should Chelsea sign Osimhen or Toney in the January window?

We can wait until next summer to see if we can acquire Osimhen for a lower price, as the Nigerian is younger and of greater merit than Toney. While we think both are ideal, the 24-year-old is one of the best in his position and is a cut above the rest. He was last season’s top goal scorer for Napoli and produced many important goals to lead his side to the Scudetto.

Due to a betting ban, 27-year-old Toney has been sidelined. It is unknown how long it will take him to get back into the swing of things once he resumes play. But with the Euros coming up next summer, Toney would want to shift attention to his performances on the field rather than controversies off it.
