According to Fabrizio Romano on his Youtube Channel, Chelsea are set to hold talks with Ian Maatsen to extend his contract, and if there are no developments, they will once again try to sell him in the upcoming January transfer window.
The Dutch starlet have only one year left on his contract, and the Blues want him to renew it. Maatsen has featured in every game under Mauricio Pochettino this season and is among the players who have taken their opportunities when presented with it.
When the Blues accepted Burnley’s offer for Maatsen in the recently closed summer transfer window, the left-back came extremely close to leaving the West Londoners. However, he rejected the opportunity to join them.
Now the Blues are facing a problem in renewing Maatsen’s contract and could be forced to sell him in January if he fails to extend his deal. This is what Fabrizio Romano had to say on his Youtube channel:
“Maatsen is out of contract in the summer, and Chelsea want him to sign a new deal as soon as possible. The proposal is still on the table. Chelsea are still insisting on extending his contract; at the moment, there is still no agreement, but the conversations will continue and they will keep pushing. But if nothing is done by the end of the year, Chelsea will consider again the opportunity to sell him.”
As things stand, Chelsea’s offer is still on the table. The onus is now on the player to make a decision on his future. If Maatsen continues to dilly-dally, it makes sense for us to sell him off rather than risk losing him for free. After all, there is nod earth of young players who are coming through the ranks.
The youngster turned down the chance to move to Burnley last summer and has to his credit, performed when called upon in Blue. The fact that he is garnering a decent amount of playtime despite the presence of more accomplished players speaks volumes about Maatsen’s abilities.
While we hope that the youngster stays put at Stamford Bridge, he has to toe the club’s line and be on the same page as those in Blue. Either we retain him on our terms or sell him off and reinvest back into the squad.
The left-back will have a few months remaining before he decides on his future at Chelsea, and if he doesn’t opt to prolong his contract, the club will be compelled to part with him in the upcoming January window. This is a valued asset that we cannot afford to lose for nothing next summer.
