Just when it seemed like Chelsea had started picking up the pace following their disappointing run in the start of the season, they lost to Brentford on Saturday.
Cole Palmer pulled no punches with a blunt six-word assessment after Chelsea’s poor 2-0 home loss to Brentford.
The defeat ended Chelsea’s four-game unbeaten run as defensive lapses and toothless attacking cost them. Cole Palmer was one of the few bright spots, creating multiple chances that were squandered by his teammates.
But the young attacking midfielder was in no mood to clutch at straws after a miserable team display. In Instagram (h/t football.london) , Palmer succinctly summarised the performance saying that they were not good enough.
“Not good enough. We go AGAIN!”
His candid critique encapsulated the frustration of supporters who expected better owing to Chelsea’s recent good form. Palmer’s damning verdict reflected the work still required under Mauricio Pochettino despite recent improvements.
Chelsea failed to break down Brentford’s stubborn defense and conceded soft goals even though they dominated the match with 69 percent ball possession and played 652 passes between them as compared to Brentford’s 244 passes.
It is the lack of cutting-edge in the opponents’s penalty box that is costing them. The boys in blue took 17 shots towards Brentford’s bar and only 2 were on target.
Palmer’s assessment was spot on – Chelsea remain well short of the elite standard demanded. The England U21 star has been a lone shining light in attack amid the injuries of forwards Christopher Nkunku and Armando Broja and Nicolas Jackson underperforming.
Palmer cannot perform miracles alone and requires far greater help from his teammates. That will have only sharpened Palmer’s disappointment at the disjointed display after showing his own quality.
Nonetheless, his defiant “We go AGAIN” rallying cry revealed a refusal to lose heart. Palmer is ready to keep driving Chelsea forward despite the setback. His combative mindset demands the same from his colleagues. The Blues must now respond as a collective, heeding the youngster’s call to improve quickly.
