Chelsea have been handed a major fitness boost as captain Reece James returned to full training on Thursday as he closes in on his return from injury. According to Chelsea’s official website, James participated in the session at Chelsea’s Cobham training base, continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury that has kept him out since mid-August.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino will be hopeful that James can make his long-awaited comeback soon amidst an ongoing injury crisis ravaging Chelsea’s defence. James has been sorely missed at both right-back and centre-back as the Blues struggled early this season.
The 23-year-old’s energetic presence and leadership have been glaring voids during his absence. Reece James has made just one league appearance this term against Liverpool. While his ability is not in question, we could do with him, being available for action on a regular basis.
Chelsea’s backline issues have intensified with veteran Ben Chilwell also now facing a lengthy layoff with recurring hamstring problems. But James inching towards full fitness would provide a timely boost. Pochettino has not put an exact timeframe on when Chelsea’s skipper will return. However, seeing James back training bolsters hopes he could feature after the upcoming international break.
The Blues have been ravaged by multiple injuries ever since the start of this season. Seeing first-team stars on the bench has become a regular for the fans, as has been their frustration with the Blues’s consistently poor performance. However, things have begun to change. Chelsea’s young-blooded roster delivered their best performance yet in the 2-0 win over Fulham last Tuesday.
Getting James fit again will be absolutely vital for Chelsea as they aim to climb the Premier League table. The Chelsea academy product’s versatility, delivery, and defensive solidity are unmatched on the Blues’ roster. After weeks of diligent solo training, James appears on the cusp of finally making his comeback. Chelsea have sorely lacked his quality at both ends during their early-season struggles.
